SECURITY: RoutersTarget: Customers who need to link multiple networks
with a basic level of security or need continuous Internet access.
What is a Router?
Routers are networking devices which connect two or more networks. These networks may have similar or differing network topologies. Network administrators use routers to connect all kinds of networks. For instance, you might want to connect two segments of a large network using a router to split the work load for better efficiency. Similarly, you might want to connect your local area network to the Internet.
How does a router provide security?
In addition to connecting multiple networks, routers provide a basic level of security by allowing you to set up network access lists which can limit the access of unidentified users. Also, a router can shield a network's internal IP addresses to the outside world by providing a single entry IP address with Network Address Translation (NAT).
While this level of security only serves as moderate protection, it may be enough for applications such as home offices and companies where security is not critical.
Many routers today also include built-in firewall security hardware or software, which provides moderate protection for your network. This
option serves as an entry-level firewall for companies who do not have the budget to support a full firewall solution.
Depending on the demands placed on your router, however, you may need a separate firewall solution to maintain network performance.
