TIPS AND TRICKS: Top 3 Myths About Network Hacking
Think you don't need network security? Trying to cut network costs and think a firewall is a good thing to eliminate? Here are the top 3 reasons some corporate officers use to justify a lack of investment in network security. We show you why they're wrong!
 |
We are a small company. No one is interested in sabotaging our business. |
Some hackers search the Internet for unprotected devices. It is a common and easy practice to scan sets of IP addresses for unprotected victims. They may then download data, upload viruses, or disrupt network operations. The intent can be experimental, random malicious behavior, or they may be practicing their techniques to later use on bigger fish. They are interested only in the crime and not the target. They do not care whether your company is large or small and probably won't even know. Leaving your network unprotected is an open invitation for these types of hackers to try out their tricks.

I don't have anything anyone would want to steal or would be interested in... |
Hackers usually don't hack to steal things. Often the hacking tricks are used to disrupt your network or corrupt your data. The point is often to show other hackers how talented they are or for personal satisfaction. A disgruntled ex-employee may even want to get revenge on a company by sabotaging the network. Some common practices include:
- Ping of Death - The hacker repeats the "ping" command until the router crashes and Internet access is lost.
- IP Spoofing - The hacker is searching for an IP address to assume the identity of in order to commit crimes under a false identity..yours!
- Trojan Horse - This is a program which is uploaded to your network and used to steal user names and passwords.
- Virus Upload - Viruses such as the Melissa, Sircam worm, or "I love you" can be uploaded directly to your servers shutting down or slowing business operations.
- Data Corruption - The hacker gets into your data and changes information. Commonly seen on web servers.
- Server Takeover - The hacker takes control of your servers for their own use (chat rooms, storing files, testing programs, etc).
Leaving your network unprotected is giving these hackers an easy opening!

The chances of my network getting hacked into are very small. |
Not true! Networks get hacked into all the time. Even protected networks get broken into, but leaving your network unprotected
is increasing your chances for hackers to discover you. Hackers can quickly scan for unprotected IP addresses. If your address
is found and a hacker breaks in, your network is compromised and your address may be distributed to other hackers.
Plus, if your network does get broken into, you will be fortunate if they only upload a mail virus or rearrange your website. What if you are hacked by someone who would use your employees' confidential personal information for their own use? You could be at a significant legal risk if this happens and you haven't safeguarded against it.
